Peacock Spider and Columbus Pride

The Peacock spider is one of the most fabulous creatures you can find. To impress its mate, the male lifts its abdomen like a pride flag. Check out this amazing video. As we now know, such impressive traits evolved *not* because the female is frivolous, but rather as a sign of genetic health–if you are healthy enough to maintain such bright color pigments, you’ve got good genes to pass on.

We don’t know if Peacock spiders show the same-sex mating behaviour  observed in some arachnids, but human pride was on display this Saturday in Columbus:

    1. The parade was huge, and such a great spirit. The Eagle Scouts got there early to be first in line. More than half the marchers were women with children. A dozen churches were represented; they were trying to have “the biggest group.” And amazingly creative floats; I should have posted the “Deaf Association” truck with the giant hand-signs. At the end, there was an enormous street fair in Goodale Park.
